Though Gervonta”Tank” Davis is believed to possess the ability of a top-10 pound for pound fighter, he’s had an inactive past 18 months. On Saturday on Showtime against Hugo Diaz, a replacement for original opponent Abner Mares, Davis has the opportunity to showcase the reason.
Diaz, though, will have something to say about that. He fought on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Adrien Broner PPV bout, and he is about five inches taller than Davis. Diaz (39-4, 33 KOs) will try to win another domain –he held a belt at junior featherweight–while Davis (20-0, 19 KOs) attempts to defend his junior lightweight title for the first time in his most recent reign.
There are loads of reasons to see Davis vs. Ruiz. Listed below are three of these.
1) Will Mares to Ruiz be an issue? : Following Mares pulled out with an injury 10 days Ruiz was called into fight Davis’ title. It is who and a type of fighter for Davis who’s 5-10 and has significantly more punching power than Mares. Davis’ camp has adhered to the exact same routine and he said he is convinced he’s prepared for the opponent switch. “This Circle I actually sparred different kind of guys,” Davis explained. “I sparred somebody that’s come after mepersonally. He was taller with a more reach, so that I thank him because now I needed it. To whatever was facing us , 12, we’ll adapt. I’m just excited to see what he attracts Feb. 9.”
2) How will Ruiz’s recent struggle affect him? : Three months ago, Ruiz dominated his replacement competition, Alberto Guevara, winning a decision that was huge. It is hard to say whether that recent bout will help him (he is in shape and won’t be rusty) or hurt him (he could be exhausted and tired after going 10 rounds). Ruiz said it will be the former. Interestingly , Ruiz said he returned to training just 3 days. “I usually take max five days away a week following a fight but with this struggle with Guevara there was actually not that much physical abuse from my part,” he said. “I did not receive that many hard hits. So I started training right away.” Turns out there was a fortuitous choice.
